THE Epistle of Paul to Philemon was written by the apostle during his first captivity at Rome. It is believed to have been written about A.D. 63 or Onesimus, a slave of Philemon, had run away from his master, and in Rome had come in contact with Paul’s ministry and been converted.

This shows the tradition surrounding who took the dictation from Paul, from where it was written, and sometimes by whom it was delivered. The latter; intimately connected with the master and the servant, was naturally anxious to effect a reconciliation between them. He used his influence with Onesimus, ver. 12, to induce him to return to Colosse and place himself again at the disposal of his master.
